The terroir

Situated between the maritime influence of the ocean and the Gironde and the pine forests, the Médoc vineyards stretch along the estuary, where their legendary gravelly hilltops evolved.
At their heart lies Margaux. And Lascombes.

Margaux

Grands Vins

If one name were to express the timeless charm of the Médoc and its wines, it would surely be Margaux.

Nestled in the heart of the Haut-Médoc region, the appellation boasts numerous Grands Crus Classés. Margaux is the name of both the AOC and the town at its centre.

The terroir

A complex terroir

Planted with vines since ancient times, Margaux’s terroir differs from those of the other five communal Médoc appellations in the diversity of its soil types, which favour the expression of very different grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot); it is also recognised for its infinitely nuanced charm.

Château Lascombes

1855 Second Grand Cru Classé

The hill on which Lascombes stands – with its Château, its vast landscaped park and its vineyard – borders the famous Route des Châteaux, at the entrance to Margaux.
Situated on one of the most beautiful gravelly hilltops, it peaks at an altitude of 20 metres, making it one of the highest in the appellation and the Médoc.
This altitude, while it is of course relative, is not trivial.

The geological gift of the Médoc terroir is its poor soil. This forces the vines to develop deep roots to find the nutrients and minerals they need to grow, giving them a unique concentration.

This extra few metres of effort required on the plots of the historic Lascombes terroir – known as “Les Régies”, “Les Doumens”, “Curton” and “Terrefort” – gives the vines the special character that earned them their exceptional ranking of Second Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 imperial classification of Bordeaux wines.

Le classement 1855

The 1855 Classification is both a recognition and a responsibility, committing Château Lascombes to maintaining its rank and doing honour, vintage after vintage, to this terroir recognised as one of the finest theatres of expression for wine.
